Gilling West

Our village was the most important place in the district long before Richmond: the Domesday Book records Gilling as the chief manor of the lands that became Richmondshire. Look out for Scots Dike, an ancient earthwork beside the village, and visit the Iron Age earthworks at Stanwick a few miles north. Dere Street, the Roman road from York to Hadrian's Wall, passes just to the east on its way to the Roman fort at Piercebridge, where you can still see the remains of the bridge over the Tees.

Richmond

A market town with a cobbled square, a Norman castle above the River Swale and the Georgian Theatre Royal. Richmond Falls and Easby Abbey are an easy walk from the centre. It's about five minutes away by car.

Walking the Coast to Coast

Wainwright's Coast to Coast route passes through Richmond, so we're a convenient overnight stop either side of the town. Self check-in means you don't need to arrive by a set time, and we take bag drops for Coast to Coast walkers. Get in touch to arrange yours.

The Yorkshire Dales

Swaledale starts just west of Richmond, with Reeth, Muker and the Buttertubs Pass further up the valley. The National Park boundary is around ten minutes' drive.

Breaking a journey on the A1 or A66

Scotch Corner, where the A1(M) and A66 meet, is two minutes away, and the A66 runs across the Pennines towards Penrith and the Lake District. If you're driving between England and Scotland, we're a quiet alternative to a motorway hotel, with parking at the door.
